Will Bhuvan beat Google Earth

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled beta version of “Bhuvan”, a web-based mapping tool like Google Earth. “Bhuvan” means Earth in Sanskrit. The application can be downloaded from http://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in/ (The website is almost inaccessible at the time of writing this article.)

Bhuvan promises to give better 3D satellite imagery of India than is currently being offered by Google Earth. Bhuvan has a many India-specific features like weather information, administrative boundaries of all states and districts, etc.. Bhuvan has best resolutions over the Indian sub-continent. It allows users to fly from space to street level, grab, spin and zoom down to any place. Viewers can zoom into Bhuvan maps up to 10 metres compared to Google Earth’s 200 metres and Wikemapia’s 50 metres.

But I am not at all happy with this message on the website “Best viewed in IE 6.0 or higher.”

It also provides tools for measuring, drawing, saving, printing and visualizing thematic information. The resolutions currently on offer are good enough to view a vehicle moving on a road quite clearly.

The launch ceremony was organized by Astronautical Society of India in New Delhi. Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), a part of ISRO, had a lead role in designing and developing “Bhuvan”. The day marks the 90th birth anniversary of the father of Indian space programme Vikram Sarabhai.

NRSA scientists developed the content using data provided by Indian satellites like Resourcesat-1. Bhuvan also focus on rural and thematic applications like wasteland mapping and terrain profile. It contains weather details like humidity levels. The data shown on the portal has been approved by the government of India. Sensitive information has been kept out of the public domain.

Nokia announced Nokia N900 Internet Tablet which runs the Maemo software. Meemo brings the power of desktop computing, the open source and Linux into mobile, delivering PC-like experience on handset-sized devices.

Running on the new Maemo 5 software, the Nokia N900 empowers users to have dozens of application windows open and running simultaneously while taking full advantage of the cellular features, touch screen and QWERTY keyboard.

The Nokia N900 encloses a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration. Nokia N900 provides multitasking, allowing many applications to run simultaneously. With N900, switching between applications is simple. The Nokia N900 features a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and fast internet connectivity with 10/2 HSPA and WLAN. The browser is powered by Mozilla technology. The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card. For photography the N900 come with a 5MP camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The N900 has full physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard. You can setup upto 10 personal email accounts with Nokia Messaging service.

The Nokia N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 500 excluding sales taxes and subsidies. The Nokia N900 will be displayed at Nokia World, Stuttgart, on September 2.

Maemo is an advanced Linux-based mobile operating system designed to run on high-end Nokia mobile computers. Being an open-source platform, it enables the Maemo community to freely modify and continually develop software to bring added value to all Maemo users.

Choosing a Wife

Seeing that his mother was in a good mood, Ahmad sat near her and said, ‘Mother, I have an idea which should bring you much joy.” His mother answered eagerly, “My son, all that you give me makes me happy. What is on your mind?”

“You know,” he told her, “I have finished my studies and can afford to begin a family. I have decided to marry.”

His mother’s face brightened with a smile. “This is very good news! I have long awaited such a day,” she told him. “How often I have wished you would marry one of your cousins. Praise be to Allah that you have made this decision before it is too late!.” Ahmad exclaimed, “Before it’s too late? What do you mean?” “Your cousin Maryam is now old enough to marry. Every day there is someone visiting her home, seeking her hand.”

Ahmad sat silently for a moment and said, “Then why should we bother her suitors?”

“What do you mean, Ahmad?,” asked his mother, dismayed.

“My cousin Maryam is not fit for me.”

“Why not? No, my son, you’re mistaken. I shall go and see about your engagement tomorrow,” his mother told him.

Ahmad frowned and said, “No, mother. Please do not do such a thing. I will not agree to this.” “When she becomes your fiancé, you will feel love for her. Put aside your fears. Maryam is beautiful, and she has a respectable job.”

Ahmad disagreed, “No. This matter only concerns me.”

Ahmad’s mother thought for a moment and said, “If you dislike Maryam, then there’s my brother’s daughter. She is as beautiful as Maryam, and she has inherited a large sum of money from my brother.

“Mother, please think about this matter from my point of view. I need someone to share my life, not a business partner.”

His mother became angry and sharply asked, “What’s wrong with my niece? Why isn’t she good enough to be your wife?”

Ahmad replied, “She is not a practicing Muslim. I want a Muslim wife.”

Ahmad’s mother laughed sarcastically and said, “You speak as if you were an angel who could only marry another angel. Why don’t you stop saying such nonsense, my son? You are an educated young man, you should give up your impossible ideals.”

“I am neither an angel, nor do I seek a saint for a wife. I am a Muslim believer looking for a girl who also believes in Islam.” replied Ahmad.

Ahmad’s mother told him, “I don’t know any girls who share your ideals.”

He said, “I know someone who measures up to my expectations. “

Startled by this admission, Ahmad’s mother asked, “You know someone? Who is she? Since when do you begin friendship with girls?”

Ahmad answered quickly, “I didn’t mean that I know a girl personally, but I know of her.” ” I see,” she said. “You have already chosen your wife. Who is this lucky girl?” “Mother, please be more understanding. I hope you will take my side and persuade father to agree with my choice.”

This appeal to Ahmad’s mother softened her, and she said, “I swear that I think only of your welfare. I’ll help you. Tell me, what are this girl ’s qualifications?”

Ahmad told her, “Nothing matters except the religious aspect. She is Muslim, and wears complete hijab.” “Oh, then she is uneducated!” “No, she has a high school education and her religious knowledge is extensive.”

Then his mother asked, “What family is she from? Do I know them?”

“She is from a good family known for their piety”, Ahmad told her. “Of what use is a well-known family if a girl has no Islamic morals?” He silently beseeched Allah to give him the patience to overcome his mother’s resistance. “A happy marriage doesn’t depend on fame or wealth. Happiness stems from spiritual nearness and mutual understanding.” Then, in a different tone of voice his mother asked,

“What does her father do for a living?” “He is a grocer,” Ahmad replied.

“A grocer?!”, she exclaimed. “Yes. He is a grocer and a very righteous man. He is the head of a happy and virtuous family.”

Ahmad’s mother interrupted him, “You are the son of a wealthy man; with your college degree you wish to marry a grocer’s daughter? What a shame! Yet you ask me to assist you! If I had chosen the daughter of a jeweler, how would you feel?”

His mother replied, “There is a big difference between a jeweler and a grocer.”

“The only difference is with regard to the substance. The former sells rings and the latter sells sugar. Both work in order to earn money,” Ahmad answered.

His mother lamented, “Imagine your father’s reaction to this news! “

Ahmad said firmly, ” This is my desire, either you help me or I’ll do it myself.”

He spoke so seriously that his mother laughed mockingly, saying, “Does the matter require a great effort? The least move you make, they will give their daughter to you gladly.”

Ahmad shook his head in doubt and said, “Wait and see!”

“What an odd situation this is! Am I to present my son to a grocer’s daughter? What special beauty does this girl possess to make you blind to every other consideration?

“I have not yet seen her,” Ahmad said.

“Then how do you know she’s not ugly?” asked his mother.

“I know she is not. As far as good conduct is concerned, physical beauty is of little importance.”

“Oh Ahmad, my amazement never ceases.”

The next morning, Ahmad told his father of his intentions. His father became angry, but Ahmad remained determined to marry the woman of his choice. Finally his father agreed and Ahmad asked his mother to visit the girl’s home to make the proposal and overcome any obstacles.

The following afternoon Ahmad’s mother, accompanied by his oldest sister, went to the girl’s house. On the way there, Ahmad’s sister asked her mother what the girl’s name was. Her mother replied, ” I forgot to ask him! “When they knocked on the family’s door, they were surprised to see a beautiful young girl open it. The girl was surprised to see the two unfamiliar women, but she showed them into the living room and went to tell her mother that they had visitors. Her mother welcomed the guests and waited for them to explain the reason for their visit. After exchanging greetings, Ahmad’s mother asked who the young girl was who had opened the door. “It was my daughter, Zaynab,” she replied. “Do you have any other daughter?” asked Ahmad’s mother. “No, she’s my only daughter”, replied her mother. Ahmad’s mother and sister were delighted to learn that the beautiful girl was Zaynab. Just then, Zaynab entered with coffee for their visitors. She sat next to Ahmad’s sister and they soon found much to discuss. Then she collected the empty coffee cups and left the room.

Ahmad’s mother began, “We have come with a blessed aim. We would be happy to have your daughter Zaynab as a wife for my son.” She praised her son for his intelligence, his good looks and his wealth, but she neglected to mention his firm Islamic beliefs, which was very important to Zaynab’s mother. Therefore, Ahmad’s mother was stunned when Zaynab’s mother shook her head slowly and said, “I’m very sorry. It is difficult for me to agree to this proposal; in fact, it’s impossible.” With much surprise, Ahmad’s mother asked, “What is impossible?”

“My daughter is still young. I’m sure your son can find a girl who suits him.” Ahmad’s mother protested, “But Zaynab suits him well! Would you be kind enough to justify your refusal?”

“I only have one daughter, and I should be sure of her future married life.”

“But Ahmad is well-off financially,” said his mother. “He is an engineer!”

Zaynab’s mother replied, “Zaynab would not marry someone because he is wealthy or has a college degree.”

Ahmad’s mother was at a loss for words. “Then what will ensure your daughter’s happiness and consent?”

“When a mother looks for a wife for her son, she should mention her son’s conduct.” said the mother of Zaynab. “My daughter is a committed Muslim. She wants a Muslim husband, and remember, my daughter wears hijab, and your son may want a modern wife, who dresses like his mother and sister.”

Ahmad’s mother laughed with relief and told her, “You’re correct. I haven’t mentioned his conduct. I thought that other aspects of his character were of more importance. My son is a faithful Muslim. He is, in fact, looking for a wife who observes hijab. Be sure that my appearance (un-Islamic clothing) is not to Ahmad’s taste.”

Zaynab’s mother also smiled and said, “You should have told me earlier! Please give us your address so we can visit you and learn more about your son.”

“We hope you can come early next week,” said Ahmad’s mother.

Ahmad was waiting anxiously for his mother’s return. As soon as she and her daughter returned home he asked, “Well, mother? How was your visit?”

“It was very strange,” she replied.

“What was strange?”, he asked. “Has anything bad happened?”

“Oh no, Ahmad. But I never expected such a thing,” she answered. “Then they have refused?” Ahmad’s father said, “How could a grocer’s daughter refuse a wealthy young man?”

Ahmad’s mother turned to her husband and said, ” They did, in fact, refuse…”

“What! they refused?” asked the father. “I spoke about Ahmad’s good qualities, but I didn’t mention his Islamic morals. My appearance also caused her to decline my proposal because her daughter is a very faithful Muslim. When I realized their objections, I told them that you are a true Muslim as well. I have come to respect them very much. They don’t care about status or wealth.”

“Have you seen the girl?”, asked Ahmad’s father.

“Yes, she is lovely and polite. Ahmad is a lucky man to have made such a choice.”

The following week, Zaynab’s family paid a visit to Ahmad’s home and plans were made for the upcoming wedding. They were soon married and there was much rejoicing.

The Spirit

The Wee One, sat in her thinking place, puzzling. The purple hyacinths grew behind the moss covered rock she sat upon. She was wondering if what she wanted to do was the right thing. The longer she sat in her thinking spot, the more she believed her idea was a good one. With her mind made up to do something she had never done before, the tiny fae took flight on golden wings.

The fae flitted high into the air over the giant oaks and beyond the meadow. She fluttered down on the shore of the Sparkling Lake. The Wee One walked from one stone to another, towards a very large rock. It stood above the others, like a beacon. She hesitated for a moment before whispering to the stone. Suddenly it appeared to rise a little into the air.

The Wee One walked under the stone. A golden box sat beneath it. Quickly she lifted the lid of the box. A Spirit filled the tiny crystal box the fae now held in her hand. As the fae walked out from under the great stone, it settled down once again. Without a moment’s hesitation she took to the air. The fae flitted to her home in the ancient oak, the crystal box now safely in her pocket.

Once home, the Wee One set the box on her mushroom table. The fireflies gathered overhead. The crystal box glittered like diamonds. With trembling hands the Wee One opened the box. Suddenly, before her stood a beautiful Spirit. “Will you help me?” The Wee One pleaded. The Spirit did not so much speak, as it thought. The Wee One knew, the Spirit would help her.

“We shall begin our journey now,” the spirit thought. *poof* In a twinkling, both the Spirit and the Wee One were transported to a city, in the Land of Real.

The Wee One was not prepared for what she saw when they materialized. It was a place that had things called buildings. Some of the buildings were as tall as the Magic Mountain. The air smelled odd and tasted funny. There was not a tree or flower to be seen. “I am frightened,” the fae whispered to the Spirit. “Is this where the children come from?”

“Yes,” the Spirit replied. The Wee One shivered a bit, but the Spirit thought, “It will be okay, I’m with you.” “Now quickly before it gets light open your pouch and do what you have come to do.”

The Wee One reached deep into her pouch and gathered a handful of faerie dust. With the Spirit by her side, she sprinkled the magic dust everywhere. When they had finished the Spirit thought again. “You have done well wee fae, for a first effort; now watch!” Quietly, a gentle rain began to fall. The Spirit smiled, for the sprinkles began to grow flowers and trees everywhere they settled.

As the sun began to rise the city was ablaze with the color of beautiful flowers, twining green vines and stately trees. From far beyond the city a rainbow appeared and held the city in its arc. The Spirit thought. “It will make them happy wee fae, it truly will.” In a twinkle the Wee One and the Spirit sat together on a spire overlooking the city. They watched, as the children, the young and the old came out of their houses. All looked about them with smiles and wonder. The city was now bursting with the beauty of flowers and the songs of birds in the young trees.

“It is time to go now,” the Spirit thought. The Wee One nodded her head. *poof* In a twinkle the two friends were back on the shore of the Sparkling Lake. The Spirit returned to the golden box beneath the magic rock. The Wee One sighed to see the Spirit go, but she knew the Spirit would always be present for those in need of her.

In a whisper the Wee One said, “thank you for helping me... Hope.”

How to Make Hot Ice

How can ice freeze without bringing it to freezing temperature? Make instant hot ice, of course. Impossible? Possible! By making crystals dissolve in hot water and letting the solution cool off, you can keep the crystals in aqueous form until you "trigger" the solidification with your finger. The mixture looks like ice and, because the crystallization is exothermic, the ice-like substance releases heat!

Steps

Dissolve the sodium acetate trihydrate crystals. Dissolve as much sodium acetate as you can in hot, almost boiling water.
- Scoop the sodium acetate and place it in the pan. Shown here, it is gel-like because it was taken from a warming pad, but in most cases, it's in powder form. About a cup of sodium acetate is a good place to start.
- Add water into your pan. You want to add just enough so that the sodium acetate dissolves. The key is to "pack" or "supersaturate" the water with sodium acetate, so don't add too much water. The less water you add, the more dense the solution will be, and the better the crystals.
- Heat the mixture until it's almost boiling.
- Stir the mixture constantly. This is where you actually dissolve the crystals. All of the powder should dissolve into liquid form until the solution can't "hold" any more, so there should be a little extra undissolved powder at the bottom. If there isn't, keep adding powder until the solution gets to that point. Remember, you want to pack as much sodium acetate in the solution as you can. It is very important to keep on stirring at this point of the project.
When dissolved, pour the solution into a glass of any size. Make sure the remaining undissolved sodium acetate stays within the pan. Do not let undissolved material get into the glass.
Cool the glass of the solution in the refrigerator for an hour or even 30 minutes (use your best judgement). What is happening here is that you're bringing the temperature below the temperature at which the solution is saturated. Normally, dissolved crystals crystallize again once you bring them below this point, but in this case, because you have the sodium acetate in a supersaturated solution, it "supercools" meaning that it goes below the normal temperature of crystallization without actually crystallizing.
Pour your solution into a tray or container. Be careful not to spill any, and make sure the solution doesn't come into contact with any solid sodium acetate. This step is optional, but in case you want a better container in which to view the hot ice formation, here's your chance.
Touch the solution with a bit of the solid sodium acetate on your fingertip or a toothpick. The solution should turn into a solid as soon as you touch it. Make sure the touch is quick, as you don't want a chunk of ice stuck to your finger! By introducing a "seed" crystal, you just created a nucleation center, triggering the process of solidification.
Touch the newly formed solid. It should be warm (130°F, 54°C) because the formation of crystals releases energy, and this is why sodium acetate is used in heating pads and hand warmers.

Tips

If you don't have sodium acetate, you can make your own from baking soda and vinegar, but it's time-consuming. Keep adding baking soda to vinegar until it stops fizzing; this reaction yields a diluted solution of sodium acetate and water. Then boil off all of the water to make sodium acetate crystals, which you can treat like the powder as described in the instructions above.
You can make ice sculptures if you pour the solution onto a pinch of the solid crystals. The solution will turn into a solid when it comes in contact with the crystals, and will continue to solidify while you pour. The ice will soon tower up!
Some chemistry notes:
- The sodium acetate crystals dissolve; they do not melt (dissolving and melting are entirely different processes).
- Also, dissolved crystals are aqueous; they are not liquid.

Warnings

Do not touch the solution until it's cooled!
Also be careful not to inhale any solution. It's never a good idea to "smell" chemicals.

Blue Laser Could Lead to Autism Cure

Lasers could one day cure, or at least aid in the search for drugs that treat diseases ranging from autism to schizophrenia, according to two new studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University and published in the online issue of the journal Nature.

A blue laser shined into a live mouse brain triggered gamma waves, which are a kind ofbrain wave necessary for concentration and cognition that people with autism and schizophrenia often lack.

"There are lots of theories about why [gamma wave oscillation] is impaired," said Li-Huei Tsai, a professor at MIT and a co-author on one of theNature papers.

"This is the first proof that a specific set of neurons are responsible for gamma waves."

The specific neurons that trigger gamma waves are called fast-spiking interneurons. Connected to hundreds of other neurons, interneurons regulate which neurons fire and which neurons remain silent. The coordinated firing of these neurons creates a variety of brain waves, from ten waves per second of alpha waves to 40 waves per second of gamma waves.

Scientists have known about gamma waves for decades. Using techniques that measure the brain's electrical activity, like EEG, scientists detect gamma waves when subjects concentrate during activities like test-taking.

One characteristic of people with autism, attention deficit disorder and schizophrenia, is that they either don't have gamma waves at all, or that the gamma waves they do have are irregular. Triggering gamma waves in people with these psychiatric conditions, might, the thinking goes, alleviate symptoms.

For decades scientists have suspected that fast-spiking interneurons trigger gamma waves, but lacked the means to prove their theory. Two different technologies, detailed in the two Nature studies, gave scientists the tools to prove their suspicion.

First scientists genetically engineered mice by splicing a gene, originally isolated by algae, that responds to blue light. Next they activated the gene by injecting a genetically engineered virus into a specific region of the brain known as the somatosensory cortex

The fast-spiking neurons were now primed and ready to fire. All they needed was a spark, and the blue laser was that spark. When the scientists shined a blue laser onto fast-spiking interneurons infected with the engineered virus, they began to fire in sequence, 40 times each second, just like the scientists expected.

The neurons fired as long as the light shined on them, from a few seconds to a few minutes. The neurons continued to fire after the laser was removed, but scientists didn't measure how long the effect lasted. The mice were anesthetized during the procedure, so the induced gamma waves didn't change how the mice behaved.

"This is really powerful technology," said Edward Scolnick, Director of the Psychiatric Disease Program at the Broad Institute. "It allows you to turn on and off specific circuits inside the brain."

This is still basic research, caution scientists, limited to the lab and years away from any clinical or therapeutic use.

But Konstantinos Meletis, another MIT co-author, believes that the blue laser could directly treat autism, schizophrenia or attention deficient disorder.

A much more likely use for the combination of laser and genetic engineering is to indirectly treat psychiatric diseases by helping researchers identify drugs that induce gamma waves, as well as just learning more about how fast-spiking interneurons work, all of which future studies at MIT will examine.

"This is the first type of work addressing these cells, and theoretically you could expect that within years or decades this could be applied to human brains, but there is still plenty of work that needs to be done," said Meletis.

Within each 30 minute segment, there should be at least one SMS Poll, inviting reader participation.
There should be repeated ‘COMING UP’ teasers via anchors and headlines on the screen. It does not matter if the content referred to actually comes up or not.
Each news story MUST be accompanied by a video. If no video is available, repeated zoom-in and zoom-out of static photographs is the last recourse.
The date of the video does not matter; having an outdated video is better than no video at all. Forget industry best practices guidelines of showing actual date of videos. Whether the video refers to the actual event of the story does not matter as long as it is somehow related to the story.
The protagonist of the story should be circled red in the video. It does not matter how obviously identifiable he is, or even if he is the only person in the video.
If the video clip is short, loop it till you milk everything possible out of the story.
Politicians, celebrities and sportspersons never argue, disagree, criticize or blame. They always BLAST, SLAM, or ATTACK.
Even if a politician, celebrity, or sportsperson says something of the same sort that he has been saying for the last two decades, he REVEALS ALL, BARES ALL, or EXPOSES.
All interviews to your channel are EXCLUSIVE, irrespective of how many other microphones are visible.
There are no talk shows, there are only DEBATES. Each 24-hour schedule should have at least one or preferably two debates with guests. The decibel level of the debate, not the content, is directly proportional to the TRPs.
For every story shameful to India, question and discuss with the guests, ‘Are we just going to forget this two weeks from now?’. Sound moralistic and ignore the piles and rooms of archives available with you.
Expert opinion counts, but street opinion counts as well, or even better. If you can’t get expert opinion, interview people on the street. The background of the ‘common man’ does not matter, as he is supposed to be common.
Synchronize your ad breaks as far as possible with other news channels, so that people don’t switch and stick to other channels during your ad breaks.
